The Vote on the Village of Woodbury

On Thursday we are facing a vote which may change Woodbury forever. New factors have arisen on an almost daily basis. The amount of misinformation in circulation is overwhelming and disgusting. And fear is everywhere.
The people who put all of this in motion have brought about a situation where we are now faced by two unhappy alternatives.
If we form a Village of Woodbury:
Our taxes will rise. Anyone telling us that the tax rise will be minimal is trying to treat us like fools.
The current setup of town services - police, fire, highway, water and sewer, etc, - could be drastically changed. A village may well choose to put in their own departments.
It is most unlikely that the village board will be a shell, passing along all authority to the town board. No group of people who have power in their hands will choose to sit back for long and let someone else make decisions.
The threat of annexation will remain.
BUT
If we do not form a Village of Woodbury we now face the very real possibility that a new village, closely allied to the leadership of Kiryas Joel, will be created.
We have said that a NO vote leaves our options open to react to changing events. Now, new events have made it necessary to reexamine those options.
We still feel that creating a village is a dangerous idea; however, not creating a village presents its own, very real dangers.
Some of you are looking to us for a definitive answer. We cannot give you one. Each path has its own pitfalls and we have neither the wisdom nor the right to make the choice for you.
We can tell you this:
Beware of anyone who tells you that there is a simple, risk-free choice. Life is not so kind.
Beware of anyone who tells you, with certainty, that the village will do this or do that. No one can possibly know what decisions will be made by a village board that does not even exist as yet.
Beware of anyone who has lied to you. He is certain to do it again.
If a Village of Woodbury is formed, we must be very, very careful about who will run this village.
Look for truthful, thoughtful candidates with no ties to the people who forced all this on us.
The town board, employees, uniformed services, and all of us who make our homes in Woodbury must work together to create a slate that has no hidden agendas, no history of lies, no secret alliances.Become involved.
Ask questions. Verify answers. Control your own destinies.

Non, Bi or Buy Partisan?
It seems the Village of Woodbury may well come into existence.
And then the fun will really begin.
Ralph (Mr. Republican Committee) Caruso and Bob (Mr. Democratic Committee) Donnelly will endorse a single slate.
They will say, that "in the interests of the people of Woodbury we are putting aside political differences and endorsing a NON-PARTISAN slate of the finest people that Woodbury has to offer."
This sort of ignores the fact that Donnelly does whatever Ralph tells him to do.
It also ignores that even if Donnelly was independent of Ralph (which he isn't) it would only make the slate bipartisan, not non-partisan.
What's the difference?
The difference is that Caruso's version of the town Republicans and Donnelly's version of the town Democrats, still comes down to the same handful of clowns that have been buzzing around Caruso for years - plus perhaps one or two new faces that they dragged in to hide behind.
It leaves out just about everyone else in town.
So they will trot out John Baranowski, who has been Caruso's pretend "intellectual" for years.
What makes a Caruso intellectual different than a regular Ralphling?
He lies using longer words.
Then they will trot out Bob Reveille. The strong, handsome type.
He'd look even better if he didn't have Ralph's arm up his butt.
Who else will this blue-ribbon, non-partisan, best-that-Woodbury-has-to-offer (Caruso version), slate have?

Pie Man's Evil Nature Revealed

Remember way back when, you know, when we thought that Swiller was Sweet As Pie?
Well, it turns out that he is actually the devil incarnate.
Just take a look at the Photo News.
Swiller is a poisonous, hate-filled spoiler whose preachings have forced the Satmar to unite to protect themselves - Moses Witriol, KJ’s head of Public Safety says so.
Not only that, but he also represents KJ’s interests, is bent on advancing KJ’s agenda and is making "pieces of any united effort to prevent the expansion of KJ into" Woodbury. Just ask Bob Donnelly - Chairman of Woodbury’s Democratic Committee and left-hand-man to Ralph Caruso, Chairman of Woodbury’s Republican Committee.

WHOSE SIDE ARE THE KJ BOSSES ON?
In early summer of 2004, the petition drive for creating the Village of Woodbury was almost completed. But suddenly, just before the petitions were turned in, a number of people came forward and asked that their names be removed, claiming that they had been misled by petition carriers.
The mood in the town began to swing away from having a village.
Then on July 11, 2004, one day before the petitions were turned in, KJ’s attorney, Dennis Lynch announced that KJ was going to form a new village of their own in Woodbury, Monroe or Blooming Grove, and that it would be done in record time.
The reaction to this announcement was fear. Rampant fear.
Interest in forming a Village of Woodbury soared.
Dennis Lynch never attempted to create a new village in Woodbury (he couldn’t while the petition was pending) or in Monroe or in Blooming Grove (and there was nothing to stop him in either of those towns).
The only effect that Lynch’s announcement had was to scare a lot of people into supporting the Village of Woodbury.
A month and a half later, as people saw that there was no move by Lynch, the fear abated. Once again the Village of Woodbury was losing supporters. The time for a vote was getting closer and it looked like the vote would be “NO.”
Just then, supporters of the KJ leadership sued to bring the vote to a halt.

Now, two years later, and a vote is a week away. Opinion in Woodbury is split. The outcome is very much in doubt.
And now, again, there is a flurry of activity by KJ’s bosses.
Lynch threatens to appeal the law suit.
KJ Mayor Abe Wieder sends a letter to Woodbury residents claiming that he is warm and fuzzy and sweet and good and please vote no on the village.
And suddenly, there are a bunch of new voters registering as residents of Milval and Serpi and Paradise Park.
It seems that the people who run KJ want the village defeated.
BUT
IS THAT REALLY WHAT THEY WANT?
Every move they have made will have one single effect – to scare Woodbury residents into voting for the village.
Is Lynch so stupid that he announces his appeal rather than sneak into court to file it?
Is Wieder so stupid that he doesn’t know what effect his letter will have?
Are the masterminds who suddenly came up with these new registered voters so stupid that they all register ONE DAY TOO LATE TO VOTE?
If the bosses of KJ are so anxious to have the Village of Woodbury defeated, why is it that EVERY SINGLE MOVE THEY MAKE HELPS GET THE VILLAGE OF WOODBURY PASSED?
But why would Szegedin and Weider and Lynch all want Ralph’s village to win?
Does it make any sense?
YES!
It makes sense if they expect that Ralph will run the new village and if they expect that Ralph will be very friendly to their goal of annexing part of Woodbury.
But why would Ralph want to do that?
Ask Ralph.
And ask his boss, Bill Larkin, who has given the bosses of KJ everything they ever asked him for.
And ask yourself, what the hell is really going on?

Liars Poke Her
Below are excerpts from two unsigned emails making the rounds responding to an email by Mindy and calling on people to vote for the village.
There is word that at least one of them comes from the folks who run the Ambulance Corps. Lord, the Uncle hopes not. Who wants to place his life in the hands of a...ah gee, the Uncle is trying to cut back on name calling.
How's "dishonest poopiehead"?
Email number 1 makes a firm and absolute statement:
"It was never said that creating a village would prevent annexation."
Meanwhile email number 2 says:
"They are scared because it is true - a village will most likely prevent annexation. "
Do you think that the left foot in the mouth doesn't know what the right foot in the mouth is saying.
So email number 2 lies to us about a village offering protection from annexation. Email number 1 is far more creative, it lies to us by saying that no one ever lied to us by claiming that a village would protect against annexation.
I'd give the "Despicablele Piece of Dog Excrement" award to the author of number 1, just for the clever twist on an old lie, but author number 2 makes a sudden surge at the finish line by including this critique of an anti-village email: "..wouldn't be surprised if KJ put this email out on their own."
Yep. The upset winner is liar number 2. But good try number 1. Don't give up. There were still more goodies in your email and we'll take another look later in the week. And there's always the title Miss Congeniality.
And just remember boys and girls: If it's unsigned it's got to be true!

The Uncle Sits Corrected
Recently (I, dunno, about an hour ago) the Uncle blithely said: "Hey!I like name calling.I'm good at it. "
Ho ho, the Uncle is so funny.
Except to a certain family member, for whom the Uncle would do anything (and frequently has, may I point out), who pretty much took the Uncle to task for taking the Ralphlings latest attacks, particularly on Mindy and Iris, too lightly.
(Did any of you follow that last sentence?)
In any case, the Uncle now sees the light and, as an act of conrition has sent the following email to Sweet-As-Pie Swiller.
"Please feel free to use any and all materials on the Uncle's blog in any way you see fit, including fund raising for OCEAN or whatever you plan to call it next week.
Uncle Betty"

The Ralphlings are screaming that Mindy and Iris are evil terrible people who have sold their souls to the devil and so you should vote for forming a village.
Who can argue with that?
And, it diverts attention from the lie that Bart Bloom and the other Ralphlings keep trying to sell us: claiming that a village will prevent annexation (it won't).
Hey, let's try an honest campaign and see if it sells.

Sweet As Pie

One can only feel sympathy for John Baranowski, who, in a letter to the editor last week, appeared to be wracked by a paralyzing fear of the future. Let me reassure him that, as is the case with so many frightened people, his terror is created solely by his ignorance of the subject at hand and that by learning the facts he will be able to put his mind at ease.
For example, he believes that the five local laws recently re-enacted by the Woodbury Town Council “can be - and certainly will be - applied to every large vacant parcel of land.” Knowledge of those laws would show Mr. Baranowski that at most only nine other parcels of land could even be proposed to the Town Board for such development.
He goes to on speculate that the laws could be applied to the “thousands (of acres) of Arden House.” He is unaware that the codicil governing the bequest of Arden House would make this impossible.
He is fearful that the senior housing that will be created will be “high-cost, densely built (and) semi-attached,” and that there are “only weak provision for holding the developer’s feet to the fire to actually sell those units to senior citizens.”
In truth, the laws enable builders to erect housing for seniors at lower cost than would otherwise be possible. The density of the senior units will be four per acre - which is no change from the previous law - and there will no attached units at all. The provisions setting these units aside for seniors have been applied in many other localities with a history of holding up.
He believes that approximately one unit per acre (senior housing aside) constitutes “high density.” While this is a bizarre definition of high density, Mr. Baranowski’s confusion is understandable. Ralph Caruso has so often recited that phrase that many gullible people have been taken in.
I note that while he complains about the placement of the entrance to the senior housing section of the WP3 project, he fails to mention that his own home is just there. This omission leads me to suspect that “NIMBY” plays some role in Mr. Baranowski’s objections. That being the case, I would urge him to find the maturity to face his own selfishness, an emotion all humans experience. I would hope that the sooner that he comes to grips with his own humanity, the easier it will be for him to accept reality and conquer his fears.
