Goshen — Ten-term incumbent Nancy Calhoun said she felt "vindicated" after discovering that she won yet another two-year term as 96th District assemblywoman.
An official from the Orange County Board of Elections reported Calhoun, R-C-Blooming Grove, with 633 of the 1,200-or-so absentee ballots by the end of counting at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
The results left Calhoun with a 541-vote margin over Democratic challenger Roxanne Donnery. The results of the election won't be certified until Wednesday at the earliest. Calhoun said she was "very happy, very relieved and very vindicated. The people who really know me through the years still supported me," she said.
She had reason to worry. By the end of election night, Nov. 2, Donnery led in Orange County by 320 votes. Calhoun has enjoyed decades of support in the Orange County portion of her district. Uncertainty about Calhoun's support in Orange County arose after she lost the support of Republican Frank Fornario, the Blooming Grove supervisor. Donnery still ended up ahead of Calhoun in Orange County by a total of 16,990 votes to Calhoun's 16,566.
But that was not enough to overcome Calhoun's substantial lead in Stony Point, in Rockland County.
The overall tally at the end of the day Wednesday was 19,460 votes for Calhoun and 18,919 for Donnery.
Heavily conservative Stony Point has traditionally been a roadblock for Calhoun's challengers, who have very little chance to make themselves known there. Donnery said newspaper coverage of her accomplishments as a 12-year Orange County legislator never reached Stony Point.
"Many had never heard of me," she said.
Despite her loss, Donnery took heart from the hard-fought campaign.
"I think it (the close race) was quite incredible if you think about what it's like to run against a 20-year-incumbent in an anti-Democratic year," she said.

Campaign tale of vengeance
With the election over, Supervisor Frank Fornario shared an illuminating story about his former political ally Nancy Calhoun, the 96th District state assemblywoman.
Fornario, a Republican who once worked for Calhoun as her campaign treasurer, publicly switched his support to her challenger Roxanne Donnery, a Democrat, just before the Nov. 2 vote.
Calhoun has slightly expanded her lead over Donnery as election officials started to count absentee ballots in Orange and Rockland counties. More than 1,200 absentee ballots are scheduled to be open by election officials on Tuesday.
According to Fornario, the incumbent expressed her displeasure for his betrayal by stopping in front of his house with one of her own campaign signs. Calhoun proceeded to stick the signs into his lawn, in front of spots where he placed posters of Donnery, the supervisor said.
Though appalled by the brazen act, Fornario was surprised to hear from a friend that the assemblywoman might have acted within her rights.
Because public rights of way extend past a portion of residents' curbs onto their lawns, the assemblywoman was not likely trespassing on Fornario's property, the friend told Fornario, the supervisor said.
"Isn't that nuts?" Fornario said. "I'm looking into it with my attorney," he added. "Nothing to do with Nancy; I'm just curious."

You must be the same person who designed and planned Roxanne's mailers and TV commercials. Heavy on insults and name calling, short on Roxanne's "accomplishments", cause again there were none.
I guess you want the KJ pipeline or your memory is failing. Roxanne has been very instrumental in fighting the pipeline.
She also was the reason for the change to a STATE Statute regarding the age of PINS; she accomplished this without even being a State legislator, can you imagine what she would have done if she was?!! Nancy IS a State legislator, what laws did she affect?
Keep saying that she did nothing, maybe someday someone will believe you.
Maybe I can get my employer to pay for my $300 monthly commute by way of a free car and gas.

If the Chair of the Legislature got a free car you don't think Roxanne would have taken it?? If Roxanne thinks it is so wrong to reimbursed for doing the job people elect you to do, then I challenge her to reimburse all the monies she has receieved from both the County Legislature and the Highland Falls Schools and to introduce a local law in the county legislature banning member reimbursements.
Roxanne gets reimbursed - no questioning that.
Nancy gets reimbursed (via a free gas card) AND gets a state car.

This debate could go on ad infinitum. Nancy was re-elected by the slimmest of margins, so now it is imperative that we all hold her feet to the fire and MAKE her get something done. She has relied on excuses for way too long, so instead of travelling around the state "getting ideas", we need to DEMAND that she start putting those "ideas" to work. WE are her boss, so lets MAKE her do her job!
This election did nothing for the image of either candidates.
And it is a shame because Roxanne has really worked hard for her constituents.
But she will continue to do so in the County government.
