The Honorable and the Dis

The folks who put together the pamphlet for the Memorial Day Parade seem to have a somewhat jaundiced view of the Village Board.

It can be argued either way as to whether they are part of the list of DIGNITARIES or a separate group following.

Somewhat clearer is the fact that while folks ranging from Assembly- woman Calhoun to members of the Town Board are all "Hon"s (Honorable), the Mayor and the Village Trustees haven't merited such honorifics.

A second, even less momentous, anomaly is the placement of Republican and Democrat Committee Chairman Caruso and Mangual with the Village, even though those parties have nothing to do with village politics (perhaps the Community Party and Preservation Party Chairpeople should be marching).

Is any of this important?

Neh!

But it's a slow news day.

So Unc, in your ever truthful researching and reporting, who exactly put the pamphlet together??

Anonymous said...

Why weren't Mike Amo, or Ed Diana, or Billy McClennan, or Donna Wanamaker, or Bill Larkin, or Bob Kwiatkowski or John Hall, or Hank Sosa listed??? They all head departments in Woodbury or represent Woodbury in some fashion!! What wise and noble group put this program together? Seems they did so in haste, without much organization.

Bobby K is listed in the pamphlet(twice). Amo, Larkin, Diana and Hall aren't coming to town. As to McClennan and Sosa, go know.

Anonymous said...

So, are you saying that only those "coming to town" are listed? (I thought Amo lived in "town"??)

Anonymous said...

Amo will probably be chillin' with his homies in K.J.

Uncle Betty said...

Yes, oddly enough the pamphlet listing the people in the parade only includes those people who are in the parade.

Probably a conspiracy.

What I want to know is, who will run against Clueless John Burke, Mike (wake up it's an election year) Aronowitz and Lorraine (You're Lucky To Have Me So Shut Up) McNeil?

Anonymous said...

Oh gee, lets take a guess at who doesnt like Mike A..."Wake up it's an election year" What should he start doing because it's an election year? Start acting like the uninformed people of the Preservation party? Oh I know, he should stand on a soapbox saying loudly that its an election year! And "Youre lucky to have me so shut up" is just a very stupid and untrue thing to say about Councilwoman McNeil. Can't figure anything else to say about them, Don? It really urks you that you can't control them.

Grow up already

I will tell you this about Mike A the Dog owners of Woodbury will vote for him and many other people in this town. He has shown he is a stand up guy! Mike please tell me how I can help you out in the next election.

Anonymous said...

Help him out by telling your friends and neighbors to get off their lazy butts and go vote. With all the whining that goes on around here, it's a disgrace how low our turn-out is for voting.

The Woodbury Republicans just met.

They endorsed Pete Stabile for re-election as Town Highway Superintendent and Mike Aronowitz for another term as Town Coucilman.

The vote on Lorraine McNeil was 10 yes, 9 no and 1 abstention which the committeee said meant that she did not get the endorsement.

Don Siebold got 3 votes for Town Supervisor. As of now, there will be no Republican candidate for that position.

This is the second election in a row in which the Republican Committee made no endorsement for Supervisor. Many see this as a reflection of the close relationship between Ralph Caruso and the sitting, Democratic, Supervisor John Burke.

Pete gets along by going along. He makes nice to whoever has power.

Mike A. may have pissed off Ralph, but Ralph's half of the Committee includes both pure Ralphlings who do what they're told and fellow travelers who still have good relations with Mike.

Don is a joke as a candidate. Ralph would be happy as a pig in shit to have John run unopposed.

It's surprising that Lorraine got as many votes as she did. The Ralph half have no use for her and even those people who agree with her politically are not filled with love for her. She's never played well with others and never will. The work that she is willing to do she does well (she is, after all, smarter than any man on the board) but half the time she doesn't give a shit and she has no loyalty to anyone but herself.

It will be interesting to see what the Dems do

It wll also be interesting to see whether anyone runs against John. He's certainly a "hale-fellow-well-met." He comes across as the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet, until he stabs you in the back. He's been in office two years and still hasn't got any idea what he's doing.

Woodbury politics - gotta love it.

Does the Republican Committee have each candidate speak at this meeting or do they just vote? On a another note Lorraine McNeil got ten yes and 9 no does the committee not know how to count? Swiller question for you are you supporting all three?

Anonymous said...

Hay Jonathan- was was the break out for Mike A? Did Ralph vote for him?

Anonymous said...

Let the games begin...

Mike and Pete spoke before the vote. Lorraine sent a letter explaining that she was not able to attend. The vote was by secret ballot.

The reasoning they gave for not endorsing Lorraine was that the vote was 10 to 9 to 1 (a blank ballot counted as an abstention). They said that a candidate needed a majority of the votes cast and they counted that as 20 votes cast and so they said that she didn't get a majority.

I don't know who we will support, we don't even know all the candidates yet.

Three principles have guided me as a member of Town Council:

Open Government where decisions are made in full view of public processes,

Honest Government where anyone can speak to me about any decision and get a
full and complete answer, and

Participation Government in which all citizens can become a part of decision

Yeah, that's why she knocks herself out for woodbury. And there are a lot of people who would disagree with this statement. We will find out on election day.

Let's not try to do a character assasination on Lorraine to explain someone elses treachery

Will Loraine walk petitions? By the way, what was the vote for Mike A?

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, I don't recall the vote count on Mike or Pete, perhaps Jimmy Booth or someone else would post them.

As to Lorraine. Most of you seem to have forgotten that there has already been a petition filed to annex Woodbury land into KJ. Lorraine spent many hours (along with SOCA At Work/OCEAN) in talks with the KJA which led to their dropping the annexation bid:

‘A gesture of good neighborship'
By Bob Quinn (Photo News)
WOODBURY-The Kiryas Joel Alliance announced this week it has withdrawn its petition to annex 87 acres from the Town of Woodbury into the Village of Kiryas Joel "as a gesture of good faith in its desire for improved relations and neighborliness with the surrounding communities."

Pinkus Jakobowitz, speaking on behalf of the alliance at a press conference with town of Woodbury officials and members of SOCA at Work, acknowledged that the sole motive behind the annexation bid was "to help alleviate the great hardship experienced by large middle income families in their quest for affordable housing.

"However, after listening to the concerns of our neighbors during various discussions with leaders of the Town of Woodbury and SOCA-at-Work for the past two months, and after evaluating the current situation as a whole, we have concluded that for the sake of promoting good neighborly relations we are withdrawing this petition for annexation," he added.

The timing of the Tuesday's announcement, noted Woodbury Supervisor Sheila Conroy, was important because on Wednesday, the state Department of Environmental Conservation was to rule on which municipality - the town of Woodbury or the village of Kiryas Joel - would be the lead agency to oversee environmental reviews.

Conroy, like Jakobowitz and Jonathan Swiller from SOCA at Work, acknowledged the spirit of cooperation among the parties. And although the details remain to be worked out, she and Town Councilwoman Lorraine McNeill also discussed the creation of a community panel to continue discussions between the groups.

That collegiality has not always been evident in such discussion.

SOCA is non-profit organization comprised of members who are concerned about the potential growth in southern Orange County and committed to fighting the proposed "KJ Pipeline" as well as any future proposals to annex Monroe and Woodbury property into the Village of Kiryas Joel, according to its Web site.

"We can prevent annexation. We can prevent the creation of new villages. But we can only do so if the panic selling stops," the group says on the Web.

But on Tuesday afternoon, at the backyard press conference in Woodbury, Swiller also struck a conciliatory tone with the Alliance.

"When the KJA saw that our objection to annexation was based on real concerns, and not blind resistance, they reconsidered the idea of annexation and told us that it was outweighed by their wish to have constructive relationships with their neighbors," he said. "They then offered to drop their annexation plan. This was done unilaterally and was not part of any quid pro quo.

"And we are profoundly grateful to the Kiryas Joel Alliance who put neighborliness first, and proved that their words were matched by their actions. We view this event as merely the start of an interaction based on mutual respect, openness and fairness on all sides."
Then he and Jakobowitz shook hands.

The issue of growth in Kiryas Joel remains, however. According to a report in the Times Herald-Record, the alliance has not withdrawn the second annexation petition it filed in August to annex 97 acres of Monroe into Kiryas Joel.

KJ reduces land bid
Group withdraws request for 87 acres of Woodbury

By Chris McKenna
Times Herald-Record

Woodbury – A Kiryas Joel organization that petitioned last year to annex 184 acres into the village from neighboring Monroe and Woodbury announced yesterday that it has withdrawn half of its request to make peace with annexation opponents.

Joining the Kiryas Joel Alliance at an unusual press conference in a back yard in Woodbury were members of the Woodbury Town Board and SOCA At Work, a citizens' group opposed to any expansion of Kiryas Joel.

Speakers said the alliance, after numerous meetings with SOCA At Work and Town Board members in recent weeks, on Monday formally withdrew its petition to annex 87 acres from Woodbury into Kiryas Joel – a request that would have required the approval of the governing boards of both municipalities.

They also announced they want to form a community board to continue the dialogue between Kiryas Joel and its neighbors and improve relations.

"This is an ongoing process," Woodbury Councilwoman Lorraine McNeill said.

The other speakers were Jonathan Swiller of SOCA At Work, Pinkus Jakobowitz of the Kiryas Joel Alliance and Woodbury Supervisor Sheila Conroy.

The announcement came as Woodbury and the Village of Kiryas Joel were about to commence their first fight over the annexation petition – a dispute in which municipality would oversee the state-mandated environmental review.

The alliance hasn't withdrawn the second annexation petition it filed in August – to annex 97 acres of Monroe into Kiryas Joel. The status of that proceeding was unclear yesterday.
The alliance, which has three candidates challenging incumbents in a village election on June 1, portrays itself as the party of peace in Kiryas Joel, accusing the village leadership of inflaming the neighbors.

Abraham Freund, who is running for village trustee on the Alliance ticket, said at yesterday's conference: "We are doing the best that we can do to bring peace. Whatever the outcome after June 1 will be, we will still be here to bring peace."

Has anyone spoken to Lorraine? Will she do what is necessary to get on the ballot? Seems like Ralph and the Dems are once again in cahoots to try to take over the board. Sad, don't you think?

Anonymous said...

The committee voted simply to endorse candidates. One does not get nominated by a committee. NYS Election Law requires any candidate seeking office to file nominating petitions with the Board of Elections. There are two council seats up. So if only Lorraine and Mike file for the GOP they will become the nominated candidates. If others file then there will be a Primary and whomever the top two vote getters are will be the GOP nominees to go up against the Democrats in November.

That "simple" endorsement, or lack thereof speaks volumes for their intent.

Uncle Betty- can you, or your "go to" people answer this...has Mike A proven that he is worth re-electing? I can't make up my mind at this point about whether he is trustworthy, and really doing this boardmember stint for the people, or for Ralph or for some higher political aspirations. He's flip-flopped several times over the years about certain matters, been downright arrogant about his abilities, and seems to shy away at crucial times when asked to state his position firmly. I guess you could say he's been real wishy-washy, that is, until he sees which way the beneficial wind is blowing. (Perhaps he's just to much of a real politician!!) I'm not so sure I like that in someone who is supposed to be looking out for my best interests as a resident. What are your thoughts??

My own guess is that he made the break from Ralph.

It may have started with Ralph's very public and boorish dressing down of Mike two years ago.

It was probably helped along by Roxanne's second trouncing of Caruso and then widened drastically when the public support (over 1,100 petition signatures) for the "5 Local Laws" showed that the majority of people willing to come out one way or another on that issue were opposed to Ralph's position.

Ralph's dismal showing in the mayoral race and then his loss of the chairmanship of the ZBA further demonstrated that the one time political boss of Woodbury was, you'll pardon the expression, a limp dick.

I see Ralph as having only one ally on the Town Board, John Burke. He hopes that apathy (and whatever election tricks he can cook up) may change that. The irony is that the Chairman of the Woodbury Republicans has to pin his hopes on the Democrats running his puppets.

Post any questions that you have for the candidates or email them to cuzzincookie@hotmail.com and I'll see if I can get them answered.

I am voting for Mike A and everyone should too. Don Please stop your BS flip-flopped posts. You did the same thing to Shelia and it's getting old. Unitl you find a better group to run this town I will be voting for all three.
