It goes without saying (it went, nothing was said) that yesterday was Dominion Day up there in Canadaland.
Today (Monday, the Twoth of July) the Town Board will vote on Chief Kwiatkowski's successor. If you've been reading the comments posted here, you know this might be a somewhat contentious issue.
Wednesday is Independence Day. No extraterrestrial invasions, please.
Thursday there will be a public hearing at the IBEW on Ziggy Brach's petition to annex land he owns on CR 44 into Monroe. Contention also a possibility.
Friday is free play. Do as you wish (or go to work)
Saturday we celebrate the Chinese invention of fireworks. All day long. Mostly at the Middle School.

So, the new chief is Ricard Vasquez and, through, no fault of his own, he has walked into a hornets' nest.
There are a good number of folks, both in the department and out, who are none to pleased about the Town Board's choice not to promote from within, and judging from tonights board meeting, the issue is not going to go away quietly.

We only have ourselves to blame for putting this band of morons in power. Let's just hope everyone remembers this in 2013.
It is not about being "groomed" for being appointed Chief. It is about looking at a number of factors.
One important one would seem to be knowing the community and its people. Someone from within, who is qualified per the Civil Service exam (on which apparently 2 existing Woodbury officers scored very high) and knows the community and its issues should not be passed over.
The newly appointed Chief may be qualifed on paper, but there is a lot more to the job than that. There is knowledge that comes from having been in the community and living here or neary-by. The new Chief has worked in NYC and lives in Rockland. Just as Rockland news is not covered in our local papers, it is unlikely that Orange County news is covered in Rockland papers. So we do not have a Chief who knows the area or Woodbury and its people or issues. One can do a crash study, but a great deal of learning goes on from just being here over time.
If the new Chief's job is beholden
to the Town Board for his position, there is a real danger that the Department is no longer independent, but can become politcalized. Coming from Rockland, the new Chief is not going to know the "players" in Woodbury. A polticalized police department is not a good thing.
As a previous poster said, we have the government we have because people voted for them and now we live with the consequences.
So What are his credentials??????????? Where did he work before? What units?
All his experience is from the City.
I was impressed with Ted Jones comments to the board about promotion tests meaning that there were actually some openings in the police department for advancement. Does any of this have to do with John Burke's son not making the Woodbury Police Department?
Accusing Robin of not being a class act? Why exactly does this new Chief deserve anything in this town? Did he do anything to deserve or earn that title? No, he was handed the job. Great way to look out for the residents of Woodbury. Give an out of county resident a 100,000 town job. Yeah, lets make it nice for his family. What about Art's family that was there to see someone else get the job he deserved and earned. Classless? you my friend are classless if you think anything about this was right.
Lets talk about board members with ties to Rockland County:
Johnny boy worked in Rockland at the Nanuet High school (Nanuet is in Clarkstown as is New City
Baldy is from Rockland County, grew up there and has business ties there.
and Surprise! one other board member has business ties in Rockland County
Who benefits from this? Not the people of Woodbury.

It seems that James Skoufis WAS for an internal candidate but did not vote for one, he voted for the outsider. He is just as spineless as the rest of the politicos.
And he wants to go to Albany as our Assemblyman? As a Democrat with no backbone he will go to Albany right into the waiting arms of Shelly Silver! Republicans for Skoufis? If ANY republican votes for him, they are stupid!!!!
As I understand what went down Monday night, Skoufis made clear that while he would have preferred a homegrown candidate, his objection wasn't to Vasquez personally and he didn't want the new chief to begin his tenure here with a no vote hanging over his head.
Make of that what you will, the position is logical.

He'll be lucky if he has Democrats for Skoufis.

I tend to agree with the other posted (though I'm an independent, not a Republican) - James has bucked the party before when he thinks its the right thing to do. You simply aren't paying attention if you haven't noticed.

Why didn't his assembly opponent join the MTA lawsuit? Has his opponent said a WORD about the KJ Pipeline or anything else? If you're looking for a spine in the race, there's only one to be found...and it 'aint with Kyle Roddey (who was a Democrat when convenient just nine months ago and is now a Republican when convenient).
James did what against KJ? If you say "he voted for the lawsuit" I will then ask what actions did he initiate? What above and beyond what he is supposed to do as a councilman did he do to show his LEADERSHIP as far as KJ goes?

I hope everyone comes out to the annexation public meeting tonight that visits this blog. We all have an opinion on the police chief and other things when it comes to Woodbury, which is everyone’s right but we all, need to come together as a town/village to stop this annexation. This is extremely critical to Woodbury and we all need to join forces regardless of political affiliation and your thoughts on the village and town government. If you do not come out and express your opinion, then shame on you and do not complain about the outcome then.

Gee funny, years ago at the last meeting at the IBEW a few people tried in vain to explain to everyone that this Village of ours was a farce, and to vote against it, no one listened. Now here we are again at the IBEW to fight annexation. Thought we didn't have to worry about this when we became a Village. Where are the founding wise men of the Village now? Silly. I have a mixed opinion about SKOUFIS. He did have the courage to speak his opinion about a home grown Chief and yet voted yes so the new CHIEF would understand YOUR not my pick but you got the job so in The BEST interest of Woodbury U have my full support. Skoufis should have not voted for the new chief. If he can't stand up for Woodbury on the town board level, what do you think he will do for us in Albany? Not much.
As for Kyle, Mr Sewer Commissioner has not resolved that issue and he has been in office for three years.
I am afraid that we can chose between two immature candidates or do a write-in. Maybe Frank Fornario would be a better choice, I am not sure. But I know one thing, I am not voting for Skoufis.

Has anyone noticed how biased the Woodbury Gazette is? If John Burke was standing in a pile of sh*t in the middle of a field, the Gazette would have a picture of it with a caption that read "Supervisor John Burke is outstanding in his field"
or "Supervisor Burke stamps out dirty smelly politics".
