Oh, So That's Why.

OK, so now we know why the Pieman was looking for tough women. Here's his email:

Tomorrow, Wednesday, there is an election in Kiryas Joel for two seats on the Village Board.

In past there have been a great many concerns about the honesty of the voting. There were reports of young men being sent in again and again to vote under different names. Further, they were sent in in waves, pushing and shouting, in order to fluster the local women who worked as poll watchers.

This year OCEAN asked the dissidents for the right to supply the poll watchers. We have assembled a group of strong women who will be able to handle whatever comes at them.

Our goal is for KJ to have as honest an election as we can help provide. We're trying to even the playing field so that the challengers have a fair shot at getting their candidates elected.

Tomorrow night we'll know how it went.
Jonathan Swiller

By the way, we can still use some more men and women, so if you can give us any time at all, up til 9 PM, call me - 845-325-0561

Establishment wins in KJ
Incumbent trustee Freund, running mate triumph
By Chris Mckenna
Times Herald-Record
June 05, 2008 6:00 AM
KIRYAS JOEL — The establishment preserved its lock on secular power in this divided Hasidic community Wednesday with a victory in an election for two Village Board seats.

It was the latest attempt by a large minority faction within Kiryas Joel to break one-party rule of its government, a challenge that had never happened in the village until 2001.

Trustee Jacob Freund and running mate Moses Goldstein beat Israel Holtzer and Salomon Feder, the candidates of the Kiryas Joel Alliance. The unofficial vote totals were: Freund, 3,121; Goldstein, 3,129; Holtzer, 2,251; and Feder, 2,259.

There was a new venue for the voting Wednesday.

Voters streamed into a new banquet hall on Forest Road to cast ballots on two floors of the building, monitored by a platoon of poll watchers, attorneys for both factions and officers from the village's public safety department.

Monitoring of elections is intense in Kiryas Joel because of contentions by the minority faction that the establishment has orchestrated voting fraud to hold onto power — claims the other side dismisses as paranoia.

One new wrinkle Wednesday was that a Woodbury citizens' group called OCEAN fielded its own squad of poll watchers to accompany the Kiryas Joel women at tables where voters sign in before entering the voting booths.

They were hard to miss.

A single OCEAN recruit, clad in white lab coat and white baseball cap, sat beside three or four Hasidic women at each of the 15 voting stations.

Their main task was to make sure the signatures that voters scrawled looked the same as the ones the Board of Elections provided.

"We're not pushing one side or another," said OCEAN leader Jonathan Swiller, a supporter of the Kiryas Joel Alliance, the opposition movement.

"We just want as fair an election as possible."

Manhattan attorney Andrew Fisher, who represented the village government, was one of several lawyers intervening in conflicts as they cropped up.

He said by afternoon that the process had been "virtually flawless."

Talk in KJ is: "Woodbury asked for it and it'll get it. What's good for the goose is good for the gander."
Thanks to Swiller KJ is going to send its enforcers to Woodbury just to assure fair elections.
The gloves are now off!

Oh Lord. People are going to try and get fair elections in Woodbury. Whatever shall we do?

Poll workers say jeering crowd egged them
June 05, 2008 3:13 PM
KIRYAS JOEL — Poll workers recruited by Woodbury activist Jonathan Swiller to monitor voting in Kiryas Joel on Wednesday say an enormous crowd of jeering boys pelted them with eggs as they left the polling station that night.

“They were shouting, screaming at us, and we couldn’t quite figure out what they were saying,” recalled Woodbury resident Mindy Prosperi, one of about 20 poll watchers brought in from outside the Hasidic community.

Swiller, who leads a citizens’ group called OCEAN, said he and one of his poll watchers exited after the others and soon found themselves surrounded by the same boys, who chanted “Losers!”

Swiller said members of the village’s Public Safety Department escorted him and the poll watchers through the hostile crowd and into a patrol car, then drove them to their cars.

Public Safety Director Moses Witriol couldn’t be reached for comment.

To me it is remarkable that "twins" considers it a threat to say that Woodbury will be assured fair elections, as though fair elections were a bad thing. What a perverse view of the world.

Hey Swiller,

How do you like your eggs? Scrambled?

Accounts of post-election melee in Kiryas Joel vary
By Chris Mckenna
June 06, 2008 4:16 PM
KIRYAS JOEL — One side describes the post-election scene as a melee in which as many as 400 boys and young men shouted at departing poll watchers, pelted at least two women with eggs and shook the van of an attorney they revile.

The other side scoffs at that description. In their account, the crowd size was closer to 150, no eggs were thrown and the noise that poll watchers heard was merely celebratory singing.

The setting was a wedding banquet hall on Forest Road where Kiryas Joel held an election for two village trustee seats on Wednesday – the latest political battle between two feuding factions within this Satmar Hasidic community.

The friction began around 9:40 p.m. when the poll watchers and lawyers who had stayed to await the voting results filed outside, where a crowd of young spectators had gathered.

Michael Sussman, the attorney for the village’s opposition movement, said he met “what looked like 300-400 young men,” who screamed at him and followed him to his van as a public safety officer cleared a path through the crowd.

Once behind the wheel, Sussman said in a written account, “I could only go backwards, into a crowd of hundreds of fist-clenched young men who had pure hatred on their faces and in their hearts. They were screaming; they were rocking my van.”

Moses Witriol, the village’s public safety director, denies that last part.
“Nobody touched his van,” Witriol said. “Unless I’m blind – and I just bought a new pair of glasses.”

Witriol claims a Kiryas Joel Alliance member who accompanied Sussman had incited the crowd. Had the two men heeded his advice to leave the banquet hall by the back door, the whole incident could have been avoided, he said.

There are no outside police accounts of what happened. Several state troopers reportedly responded to the scene with lights flashing, but no record of their visit exists.

Orange County Sheriff’s deputies – who monitored the last village election, in 2005, under court order – had no such obligation this time and got no requests for help, Undersheriff Kenneth Jones said.

Jones recalled a brief moment of friction after the 2005 election, when a crowd of young people rocked the car of two opposition lawyers as they tried to leave. Deputies intervened and quickly ended the altercation, he said.

Sad to say, but the polling places in Woodbury are not what needs to be wathced, rather it's the sleezeballs running the dirty campaigns!

Forget the polls. We need WATER WATCHERS!!!

WATER WATCHERS????

Mindy Prosperi with egg on her face! A sight to behold. Sorry I missed it.

The poll-watching elves
Think well of themselves.
Fair elections are a noble pursuit,
And OCEAN now claims a new horn to toot.
So instead of name-calling and bashing,
How about learning and helping and asking.
"What can I do?"
How can I save Woodbury?"
The elves know the answer.
Do you?

Unfortunately when you get involved with an Ocean, you're bound to drown.

Anonymous said...

When you get involved with Ocean it means that you have a propensity to root out injustice and inequities, so why don't you drown in that!!!!

Anonymous said...

I see you're picking on Ocean,
What's with all the commotion?
With a bit of praise,
And a lack of malaise,
At least they get things in motion!

Anonymous said...

They get things in motion like an eddy into an abyss.

Anonymous said...

Didn't you mean: "Like an EDDIE into an abyss?"

Anonymous said...

OK, so Ocean kept the water towers out of Gonzaga, kept rt 44 out of KJ's hands, stopped annexation from Woodbury to KJ and sent poll watchers to the KJ election, and you're pissed with them why?

Anonymous said...

The fact that they did none of those things but took the credit for it is one possible reason.

Anonymous, what's the point in posting lies that can easily be disproved? Also, what is your complaint about OCEAN doing good things foir Woodbury. Do you want to see the town screwed by KJ or what?

Anonymous said...

Now, now, Ralph and Uncle Bill are the ONLY ones allowed to screw Woodbury..........

Did anyone hear the local radio today?

The KJ elections were the topic on the Jerry Boss and Lorraine show. The guest was Michael Sussman.

It was very interesting to hear Mike S. and Lorraine so buddy-buddy. I wonder what Charlie S. will think when he finds out? After all, isn't Charlie suing Lorraine? And isn't Mike Sussman Charlie's lawyer?

Mike did reveal alot about what goes on over there. It was an eye opener!

Does anyone know why the THR always gets everything wrong?

Anonymous said...

The info comes from Swilller's press releases to Mele

Anonymous said...

Swiller gives the THR press releases?
I don't think so!

Anonymous said...

Reading the paper one would think,
That at least they would be accurate with their stink,
But THR reporters write not what they see,
But what doesn't match appropriately,
With what went on at the event,
They just give it their particular bent!

In truth, I don't mind pseudonyms so much as no name at all. It's a pain in the neck to say "anonymous 43, I agree with this or that."

Just make up a name and use it.

just as uncle betty made up a name and uses it?

Gee, looks like the Ralphlings are tired of their lack of creatitivy and have even done the Acronym bit.
Well, here's one for you

R= Righteous
A= Anachronistic
L= Liar
P= Pedagogue
H= Hell-bent

Don't forget to look up the words that you don't understand, dear ralphling!!!

Signed,

(because I know that will drive you crazy and all you have to know is that there are people out there that can't stand you and your leader, just try to figure out who we are..hahahahaha!!!!!)

Whoever wrote the above meant to discredit Ralph (I think), but I don't think he/she used the right words to do that. Righteous has been used to describe Christ. Anachronistic? I guess you mean he is ahead of his time. A pedagogue is a teacher, certainly not a negative term. Hell-bent on saving Woodbury, from what I have seen. Liar? I don't think so. Lying implies an intent to deceive, something done intentionally. Ralph does not do that. As far as your last hahaha--it sounds to me as if you are a middle-school kid trying to show how cool you are. You need to grow up.

YOU need to look in a dictionary,
Righteous can be a negative term (think Cotton Mather) as well as a pedagogue, which is a teacher, yes, but one who employs a pedantic , plodding style; hell bent because he is going straight to Hell because he is a liar! Anachronistic can imply behind the times as well as forward looking, Ralph is definitely behind the times. Got it now?
Nice try Ralphling, at least we are not hearing from Don anymore, because he doesn't even have the semblance of intelligence, while you, maybe more dangerous because you have an inkling of smarts, but just an inkling. And besides, how smart can you be if you follow the intellectually challenged Ralph?

Some days you Ralphlings make it too darn easy.

"A lot" are two words, not one.

Lemmings, and all others, might follow something, but they do not "follow of" something.

Lastly, one might "own" a blog or "post" or "blog" to it, but one does not generally "author" it.

I'll call that last one a toss up and credit you with two and a half errors in a single, thirteen word sentence fragment aimed at insulting the intelligence of others.
