The Hail Mary Pass

In football a Hail Mary pass or Hail Mary play is a forward pass made in desperation, with only a very small chance of success. The typical Hail Mary is a very long forward heave thrown at or near the end of a half where there is no realistic possibility for any other play to work, though the most famous were thrown at the end of a game. The phrase derives from the name of a prominent Roman Catholic prayer to the Virgin Mary. The point is that the success of such a pass is so unlikely that it would need divine intervention to work.

KJ disavows campaign letter
Woodbury — Kiryas Joel officials say they had nothing to do with a letter circulating in Woodbury that purports to be an endorsement by their residents for the mayoral candidate Ralph Caruso."We're not taking any position in this election," Village Administrator Gedalye Szegedin said. The hand-delivered letter is on bogus Kiryas Joel letterhead and is addressed "to our Woodbury Neighbors." It praises Caruso for helping Kiryas Joel win grants through his work for state Senator William Larkin — a boast that presumably is intended to turn voters against Caruso.Caruso is one of four candidates for mayor running tomorrow in the first Village of Woodbury election. Eight other people are running for four trustee seats.
Chris McKenna

Caruso is down to his last few hours. Every little trick seems to have failed.

Skipping the public debate hurt him.

The closed-door debate he got the Record to agree to ended up hurting him.

His refusal to answer any questions about the contradictory and flat-out false material in his Preservation kits hurt him.

OCEAN's newletter warning people about last minute dirty tricks, along with postings on this blog doing the same, have made it very unlikely that trying to tie his opponents to KJ would work.

And so...

The Hail Mary Pass.

Suddenly there is a phony letter claiming to be from KJ's political bosses, supposedly backing Caruso.

An obvious forgery, we are told.

Who could have done this dastardly thing and why?

Since, it is reported to be an obvious fake, it isn't going to hurt Caruso.

So whom will it hurt?

Well, if we decide it was put out by Caruso's opponents, we have reason to be mad at Caruso's opponents.

But, considering all the damage that Caruso has already done to himself, why would his opponents take the risk?

Considering the clean campaign they have run so far, why would his opponents suddenly change to such ugly tactics?

Considering how competently and professionally they have done everything else, why, if his opponents chose to take the low road, would they create a tranparent phony that would be seen through instantly?

Is it too big a stretch to imagine that some campaign, Caruso's for example, in trouble, on the verge of losing, would attempt one last desperate act and ...launch a transparently bogus attack on themselves in order to tar their opponents?

Is that possible?

If not, is there any other explanation that isn't even less believeable?

Cui bono?

Cui bono ("Good for whom?", or "Who benefits?") is a Latin adage which means that the person or people guilty of committing a crime may be found amongst those who have something to gain, perhaps financially. Although the principle is useful in criminal investigations, the party with the most to gain may not always be obvious, or the guilty party may distract attention by diverting attention on to a scapegoat. The expression is said to have been coined by Roman consul and censor Lucius Cassius Longinus Ravilla, and was used by Marcus Tullius Cicero.

Thank you DOC and other concerned business owners of Woodbury!

Paid ad as seen in the Record on 11/1/06:

An open letter to Village of Woodbury Residents,

When someone constantly uses deception to spread misinformation you can never trust that person. That is precisely what Ralph Caruso and his Preservation Party running mates have been doing to Woodbury voters since last August.

Question from their August Preservation Kit: “After the Village of Woodbury is created, will the zoning regulations change as compared to the present Town of Woodbury zoning regulations?”

Answer then: “NO, the intent of the proposed village is to secure our present zoning and not to change it…To protect the zoning we now have we must approve the Village of Woodbury.”

Answer now: “All zoning regulations will be reviewed to identify and close loop-holes, identify and clarify ambiguous regulations.”

Adrienne “Burke” Fuchs recently said: “The new village government was formed to take care of zoning issues and not take over town services.” (Times Herald-Record 10-28-06)

CARUSO is WRONG on all the important issues

On Annexation: First he says forming a village will prevent it. Now he says he will fight it when it comes. WRONG!

On the Budget: He continues to promote a false yearly budget of $154,000 even though it doesn’t begin to address reality and he is proven incorrect by every other candidate and the newspapers WRONG!

On the Fire District: He claims "The Town of Woodbury & the Village of Woodbury will form a Joint Fire District, Town Law Article 11-A, & operate under Town Law Article 11, the same law that they operate under now, with no changes." The NY State Department of State & the NY State Conference of Mayors confirms that the Fire District must be eliminated by 12-31-2007 & the Fire Dep’t. will then operate under Village Law Sub-Section 254 because the new Village & Fire District are coterminous. Joint Fire District, lower insurance rating, higher taxes. WRONG!

If he can’t get it right now…what will he do if he gets into office?

Fire the Police Department? (He’s already talked about it)

Ralph Caruso and his Preservation Party are
Wrong on Issues - Wrong for Woodbury

Don’t let our precious new Village slip into their clutches.

Sincerely,
The Concerned Business Owners of the Village of Woodbury

Now Ralph is spewing lies to cover up more lies...in his response to the fact that "Woodbury gets hardly any grant money from Senator Larkin.", Ralph's response was " Fact - Just two examples of grants from Senator Larkin; 2002 - $300,000 Water System upgrades, 2005 - $100,000 to repair Ridge Road, that part of the road that you had to take detours to get around. Put simply, Woodbury has received almost three quarters of a million dollars in grants from Senator Larkin over 10 years, to help offset tax increases."

Why not tell the WHOLE truth, that in the same period, Larkin saw to it that KJ got approx $10,000,000!! That's TEN MILLION!!!! Come on Ralph, if you're into truth telling, tell it ALL!!!!

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, and he says that NO members of the Citizens to Preserve Woodbury sued the Town...ask Don Seibold if he is a member, and how about Karen Ungerer??? Nooooo, they're not members, they just pass out the preservation kit and write nonsensical letters. More lies that eventually you'll have to answer to Ralph.

For the record Ralph- we're immune to anything that comes from KJ- real or fake- it's all the same. WE know you're behind it, so nice try, but it ain't working!

And on another note...
T-H Record 11/2/06

Endorsing Randazzo
In a recent letter to the editor, an endorsement was made for one of the candidates running for New York state Legislature representing the Town of Woodbury.

At the end of the letter, the writer indicates the Town Board members urge voters to support Nancy Calhoun. While my title is supervisor, I wish to indicate that I consider myself a member of the Town Board.

This statement is to clarify that I endorse Richard Randazzo to be our representative to the New York state Legislature. His positions are well-known and if his tax relief program is enacted, there will be significant tax savings for all.

John P. Burke

Central Valley

Isn't that nice that our Town Supervisor wishes to personally endorse a man who vowed to help those suing the Town of Woodbury, and even helped organize fundraisers for those suing the Town. Way to go John...you certainly are looking out for our best interests. NOT!!!!

Ralphie cries "In fact, Ralph Caruso had a debate with two of the three mayoral candidates on 10/30/2006, at the Times Herald Record office, where the Community Party Mayor candidate Stephanie Berean-Weeks did not attend." He neglects to state that he demanded this CLOSED-DOOR debate, and proceeded to stick his foot in his mouth by revealing that becoming mayor ws his chance to get even and settle scores. Stephanie was wise beyond her years in her decision not to attend such an orchestrated meeting, and stayed true to her constituency that she has answered to in public and on their doorsteps!!!

Finally,

The time has arrived to put all this bullshit rhetoric aside and make a decision.

Even though many of you out here in blog land have an extreme bias on who you like and who you don't, it is now time to step up to the plate and officially cast your decision through the political process.

Come this evening, all will know in what direction WOODBURY, not just a select few, wants to go.

So get out of your little tiny rooms, dare the big bad world and
VOTE!!

I don't know about you folks, but I can't wait until this election is over. Can we finally close the door on Ralph Caruso and his bag of dirty tricks? Let's hope so- keep your fingers crossed!

I finally visited Mr. Caruso's website and it finally hit me. I've been trying to keep an open mind, but it finally hit me. Just looking at the name of his website- Village of Woodbury. This man truly believes he has a mandate to become mayor. Rather than name it Preservation Party or Citizens to Preserve Woodbury, he actually uses the Village of Woodbury, like he is already the mayor! I'm sorry, but I just cannot vote for someone with the audacity to crown himself mayor before the public even votes! Unfortunately for Mr. Caruso, despite what he has asked me to believe, his arrogance and dictator attitude has forced me to cast my vote for one of the other candidates. And, since he seems to have kept his slate of trustees mute, they will not get my votes either. Your loss Mr. Caruso.

My prayers also go out for the future of our town/village.

I'm not going to touch the idea of God being on anyone's side here, its just too dangerous to mix politics and religion. But I have to have faith that truth will win out this election.

Just the fact that Ralph's people continue to spam us with dozens of copies of this new development and their ads, despite Uncle Betty's request otherwise shows how desparate they are for this new ploy to work.

Sorry Ralph, we ain't buying it.

**NEW RELEASE**

Important Facts for Highland Lake Estates Residents

Recently you received a flyer from the Highland Lake Estates HOA. It contained unsubstantiated accusations, lacking source reference and proof. In fact, it did not identify any person let alone any officer of the HOA, who are suppose to represent the views, concerns and interests of all the home owners, not just their personal views.

The flyer goes on to say that the HOA met with the Community Party Candidates. Why weren’t the Preservation Party Candidates given the same opportunity to meet with the HOA? We did knock on doors and distributed information.

Responding to specifics in the flyer we offer the following,

Lie #1- Citizens for the Preservation of Woodbury, Ralph Caruso’s group sued our current Town Board and Planning Board.

Fact-Three individuals residing in Central Valley, where their homes are next to the WP #3 project, sued the Town Board. They sued for a revote by the Town Board (not for money) because the Town Board voted to approve the 5 local laws prematurely, violating General Municipal Law 239, and they won the Lawsuit, and the Town Board had a revote. No Preservation Party Candidate is part of this lawsuit or any other lawsuit against the town.

Lie #2 – Do we want a village run by people with ties to KJ.

Fact - No Preservation Party Candidates have any ties to KJ. We are residents of Woodbury as you are, and are the group who organized and fought for the creation of the Village of Woodbury, to secure our zoning and quality of life. All of the Community Party Candidates worked very hard to defeat the creation of the Village. Makes you wonder who does have the ties to KJ. when the Preservation Party Candidates were for the creation of the village and the Community Party Candidates were against the creation, same as KJ.

Lie #3 - Woodbury gets hardly any grant money from Senator Larkin.

Fact - Just two examples of grants from Senator Larkin; 2002 - $300,000 Water System upgrades, 2005 - $100,000 to repair Ridge Road, that part of the road that you had to take detours to get around. Put simply, Woodbury has received almost three quarters of a million dollars in grants from Senator Larkin over 10 years, to help offset tax increases.

Lie #4 – Remember how KJ. residents lined up to vote no for the village? Watch the turnout to support Ralph Caruso.

Fact -They lined up alright because they were on the same side as the Community Party Candidates who opposed the creation of the village, as did KJ. Then when they arrived to vote and went to the table to sign to vote, they were met with voter registration challenges. Challenges filed by Ralph Caruso with the Orange County Board of Elections, 4 days before the election. Ralph Caruso Challenged 222 newly registered seasonal and summer camp residents. Those that came to vote were required to complete and sign a sworn affidavit before they were allowed to vote, and those who did not complete the affidavit, did not vote. To date all of those challenged have not been put back on the voter rolls, and won’t unless they can prove primary residence in Woodbury, thanks to Ralph Caruso.

Lie #5 – Preservation Team wanted the questions prior to attending the debate.

Fact- We have correspondence with the Times Herald Record that dispels this accusation of wanting the questions before hand, and clearly shows we only wanted a professional format and debate sponsored by a non-bias organization, not an organization supporting the Community Party Candidates, as did the Sponsoring Organization. In fact, Ralph Caruso had a debate with two of the three mayoral candidates on 10/30/2006, at the Times Herald Record office, where the Community Party Mayor candidate Stephanie Berean-Weeks did not attend.

Truth #1 – HOA flyer says, When people attack others rather than discuss the issues, there is a generally self-serving agenda in place.

Response -I read the Highland Lake Estates Homes Owner’s Association’s attack flyer you received, and can only say I hope the writers of the flyer read it because they “attack others rather than discuss the issues”, the proof is in the flyer!

The Preservation Candidates, Ralph Caruso, Mayor, Adrienne Fuchs, Benjamin Meyers, George Pedersen, & William Mullooly, Trustees have campaigned on the issues. We put forward proposals, and a plan, in fact we have done so for the past two years. We distributed solid information, only to have the Community Party criticize it, saying it won’t work. We have not and will not sling mud as our opponents have with personal attacks, never telling the residents how much it will cost if they govern the village! Yet, they want you to elect them! Our information packages have included clear and specific costs and proposals.

Remember to vote Row “A” for the Preservation Party Candidates
Ralph Caruso, Adrienne Fuchs, Benjamin Meyers, George Pedersen & William Mullooly

People watching the past week--only a week-- knew that the Preservation Party would pull some last ditch effort and that it would somehow involve Kiryas Joel.

Who told people when the whole village creation began that signing village petitions would stop annexation? Fear of annexation from whom? Did the Community people tell you that? No, it was the Preservation People.

And after the signing and voting, you found out the Preservation People were wrong---a village does not stop annexation. The question is were they wrong on purpose or did they deceive you so you would sign the petition and vote for the village?

The Preservation group claims you should not vote for people who questioned, maybe even opposed the village. First of all, how do they know what most of the Community Candidates felt about the village? Were they inside the voting machine to see how they voted? I saw no hand outs opposing the Village creation from the Community candidates.

But more importantly, people who did speak out against the village did so because they were concerned about the lack of truthful facts about its consequences. Thoughtful people, without agendas, knew the Preservation budget made no sense and that the people connected with the Preservation Party wanted to get their hands on the zoning. Both have now been proven true.
So do you prefer to vote for people who deceived and misled you about the village they created (Preservation group) or do you vote for people smart enough to question untruths and ask for real answers before voting for something (Community people)?

The Community Party took its chances at an open debate, questions unknown, before the public. The Preservation Party said no, closed debate, no public present, with only their mayor candidate. Doesn't the voter have the right to see and hear the people asking for their votes?

The joke was that the Preservation Party lost twice on that decision--the public saw that they would not come out and answer questions to us directly. And Caruso now complains about unfair reporting from the closed door debate. Since he insisted on the closed door format, the public has no way of knowing what happened.

Lastly, the Preservation people misled another town, Cornwall, about the 5 laws and encouraged them, including their Supervisor Randazzo,(who happens to be running for a state office) to join Caruso and other Preservation supporters in a law suit against Woodbury. What gall on their part and what nonesence for Randazzo to get involved and even contribute to this.
First: 4 of the 5 laws have nothing to do with the Legacy proposal--there is no senior housing proposed (2 of the laws relate to that). 2 other laws relate to zoning only on Brodsy's project (zoning and conservation cluster designation). So only 1 of the 5 laws might have some bearing on Cornwall and the Legacy project. But did Caruso and his crew tell the people of Cornwall that? No, because then they couldn't get their hands in Cornwall's pockets. Bet you Randazzo did not know this either and the hand went into his pocket and took his money.

Why are people so angry with Caruso and his group? Because they think we are fools and continue to mislead us. What is even more scary is that they justify and believe it. They have tricked themselves and then go after people who see through it.

This past week was not a good one for the Presrvation Team as their fabrications came under examination and did not hold up. Given this long trail of deception, who would benefit by putting out a false KJ letter that would be discovered in time to tell everyone before they voted. Really-- that is so lame but then they have gotten away with these tricks for so long, what's one more?

Fall for it again and they run the Village and really put us in trouble. Set aside all the anger and bad language and look at the record of the Preservation group. Their own literature keeps changing as they shift positions and try to deceive and confuse. And now they are angry because people see what they have done and have called them on it? Who do you really think played the KJ card at the last minute?

Randazzo/Caruso's lawsuit fiasco gets even better...

Cornwall is chock full of townhouses and condos, TRUE high density housing which also give next to NO school tax contribution. They're still approving and building several more projects as we speak, and are dealing with their own water issues and public outcry over the Moodna creek.

But what happens? Ralph and co. give Randazzo the chance to scapegoat our own 2+ acre home/open space plan as SKYROCKETING Cornwall's school tax and traffic burden.

-With NO acknowledgement of the comparative densities.

-IGNORING how Legacy Ridge's high-values homes may actually PAY FOR Cornwall's terrible planning through taxes.

-IGNORING the fact that Woodbury has banned townhouse and condo construction for years, but just so happens to make a PERFECT scapegoat for a man looking to get elected to the state assembly, and a man looking to become mayor and have his lawsuit funded.

And the comments about Ralph not having any involvement with the lawsuit is as nonsensical as claiming Doc's alone 'cause it was his credit card. Who organized and attended all those fundraisers? Who was there chanting "high density housing" to Randazzo after that meeting where Lorraine tore into his hypocrisy. Yes, many of us were there, and as I recall the Uncle has the photographic evidence posted on this very site.

Its an important history lesson on two men so eager to sue out town for political ends. We'd best get familiar with lawsuits, should Ralph gets into office and starts "tweeking" our zoning with no concern for little matters like the law.

To find the answer to your question take a look at the higher salaries to the Mayor, clerk and the tax collector which by the way no other village in Orange County has? Are we going to let three people run 10,000 for their personal quest for power and money? This was on the Community Parties web site and I guess they thought we would just forget their promise.
