Late News From The Sea

Swiller just emailed this to the Uncle:

Stop the Ripoff of the Monroe-Woodbury School District

Monday, 1 PM, Woodbury Town Hall

On Monday, August 28th, at 1 in the afternoon, there will be a hearing in Woodbury Town Hall, held by the Orange County Industrial Development Agency on whether to grant a tax abatement to the new Hampton Inn hotel being built behind Kohl's Department Store.

This abatement would cost the Monroe-Woodbury School District as much as $1,500,000 a year.

Here are some main points:

* When the Hampton Inn made it's presentations before the Woodbury Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeal at which they asked for and received approvals and variances, they made no mention of seeking a tax abatement.
* The OCIDA's own requirements for eligibility for tax abatement specifically exclude hotel's, but the Hampton Inn is trying to slip through a loophole for "Tourist Related Industry."
* OCIDA's abatement program exists to lure desirable industries, such as those in high tech, that pay high salaries. Hotels create low paying jobs such as cleaning staff, bell hops, etc.

This hearing ought to take place in the evening. Most of you work during the day, and so attending a meeting at 1 PM on a Monday is not possible. But if you can be there, please show up and let the OCIDA know how you feel.

If you can't come, you can send your views by email to OCEAN at info@nyocean.org and we will deliver them at the meeting. Please do this before noon on Monday.

The County has already deprived us of our fair share of revenue from The Common, don't let it happen again.

Oh nooooo, don't let Monroe Woodbury get ripped off, I mean, they have only been ripping off all of the tax payers around here for years. They put up budget vote, it get's defeated, they cry austerity and put vote up again and again until it passes. Screw Monroe Woodbury, it's time someone rips them off for a change.

Uncle- Why does Mr. Swiller refer to it as the Monroe-Woodbury School District? From what I understand, the abatement effects school & PROPERTY taxes with regard to the valuation of the building (not the land it is built upon)? Am I correct? If so, then it effects those people in Woodbury twice- once for school taxes, and again for property taxes. Will Mr. Diana be there tomorrow? He himself specifically stated that it does NOT include Hotels and Motels- so in my estimation, that should be it- cut and dry- no exceptions to the rule. Unfortunately I too will not be able to attend, as my job makes it impossible. Did Mr. Burke and Mr. DiLorenzo object to the scheduled time of this meeting? Since Woodbury is hosting it, why isn't it at our discretion the time for which it occurs?

How does the Village figure into this?

Anon #2- you're a jerk.

I realize that I'm supposed to be Swiller (when I'm not being "LM") but I have no idea why he does stuff and in my opinion he was a little late off the mark on this one.

I want to thank Jonathan Swiller again for being there. I just e-mailed everyone on my address book to send a message to that meeting. Irish Mike

What I want to know, is it legal for someone other than Ralph to screw us over? Doesn't he own the copywrite on that?

Uncle Betty said...

I agree. If Swiller wants to deliver our objections, we should email him that one.
We refuse to be ripped off by someone other than Ralph. There is, after all, such a thing as loyalty.

To the poster that feels Monroe -Woodbury should get ripped off.

Do you understand that WE THE TAXPAYERS are the ones that get ripped off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who do you think pays for their enormous budget?
Who do you think pays for all the school teachers salaries?
Little creatures in the night?
Wake up and follow the program.

Mr Swiller's statement that an abatement would "COST" the school district is misleading. A tax abatement will not cost the school district anything. The district will have wait a few years before it gets the full tax revenue, true, but it will not have to pay for it.
What you should be looking at is what this school district is doing with all the tax revenue it currently receives. This district has a large amount of tax rateables from the current commercial districts and yet the homeowners school taxes are obscene.

If a hotel is given an abatement that allows it to not pay taxes - that COSTS Woodbury and the school district.
Feel free to play word games if that suits you, but the fact remains that taxes not paid come at a cost - in this case that cost is made up by the very home owners you pretend to be concerned about.

What is happening with the village? It's as if it was all a dream. When does the village form? When are the elections? Who's running?

NU2UB, Im sure the Village candidates will be named just as soon as Ole Ralphie can be sure of who he can control. Most likely will be his normal band of merry misfits ie.; Mulooly, Siebold, Havilland etc. etc. As a matter of fact he is probably just waiting for the full moon to finish his voodoo mind control ritual.
