What Does It Profit A Man If He Gains The Whole World But Loses His Keys?
or
If Your Grassroots Organization Saves the Town But Nobody Hears About It Are You Out Of The Woods?

I just got back from Washington DC and boy are my twenty-first century governmental paradigms tired.

And now a very short history of the SOCAs (because no one really cares). So first there was S.O.C.A. which was a dumb name to begin with, but they got the County Leg to pass a resolution asking NY not to give KJ the Pipeline and that probably meant one hell of a lot to the NYC Council (not).

Then there was SOCA-OCEAN which is a completely meaningless name and they backed Nancy Calhoun (who would have won anyway) and Bonnie Kraham (who lost, but beat the KJ block vote in Monroe, but still lost) and then came SOCA At Work which makes some sense as a name since by then just plain SOCA was in a coma. SOCA At Work got the KJA to drop its petition to annex part of Woodbury, but nobody knows about it so big whoop.

The point of all this is Uncle Betty’s first contest. You ready? Here goes:

UNCLE BETTY’S FIRST ANNUAL NAME THE NEW SOCA CONTEST

Once a year, when Swiller gets bored and starts a new SOCA, it will need a name, and that’s where we come in. The best name for the new SOCA will win something (the Uncle hasn’t decided what, but I am sure it will be snazzy).

To help get the ball rolling here are a few suggestions.

SOCA At the Mall

SOCA In Blue Jeans

SOCA On Alternating Thursdays

SOCA Medioca

Go SOCA Your Head

La SOCA Loca

SOCA meets the Wolfman

Dear Uncle.

Thank you so much for your kind help, but at the moment we don’t have any plans to change names.

Since you like facts so much, here are a few. When we helped Frank Fornario and Roxanne Donnery pass their resolution (and the vote was 20 to 1) the intended audience wasn’t in NYC, it was the politicians here in Orange County who thought that as long as they did everything that Gedalye Szegedin, KJ’s Administrator, wanted they were invulnerable. We put them on notice that there was more than one bloc vote out there.

That was the same message we sent when we helped Bonnie Kraham out-do Annie Rabbit in Monroe. Yes, we lost in Warwick, but our major effort was in Monroe and we (and the Kiryas Joel dissidents- the KJA) proved that you could beat the current leadership of KJ in a head to head match up.

It is unfortunate that the Times Herald Record ignored the story, but we did reach an agreement with the KJA that led to their dropping their annexation petition in Woodbury. And the fact that most people don’t know it happened doesn’t change the fact that it did happen and that Woodbury is safer now because of it.

I am not happy that events forced us into changes. But we are still her and we are still fighting for a better County.

On a somewhat separate issue. You are dead right in calling the Caruso-Burke people a “caucus. They were out at the Woodbury Town Meeting tonight and they all had the same bologne to sell. I have some lovely pictures I’d like to send you, if you tell me how to do that.

One point that was made about them is that while they continually attack the people who are trying to make this town run, they themselves won’t lift a finger.

Neither John Burke nor Bo Amidee nor Darlene Reveille nor Hank Sullivan has ever volunteered for a single committee or commission or board or panel in Woodbury. But they continually criticize those who do.

Jonathan Swiller

Trinidadianmusic
Soca is a dance music which is a mix of Trinidad's calypso and Indian music and rhythms, especially chutney music -- it is not, as is often said, a fusion of soul and calypso. It combines the melodic lilting sound of calypso with an insistent percussion.

The acknowledged father of soca was Lord Shorty (né Garfield Blackman), whose 1963 recording of "Cloak and Dagger" started the trend. Shorty experimented with calypso by adding Indian rhythm instruments like the dhantal, tabla and dholak. His "Ïndrani" was the first mainstream hit from the genre, and was followed by a watershed album called Endless Vibrations, which spawned numerous imitators.
Lord Shorty initially referred to his musical discovery as “solka”, meaning the true “soul of calypso”. “Solka” was changed to “Soca” by a musical journalist.

Like calypso, soca was used for both social commentary and risqué humor, though the initial wave of soca acts eschewed the former. Lord Shorty was disillusioned with the genre by the 1980s because soca was being used to "celebrate the female bottom, rather than uplift the spirits of the people". Soon after, Shorty moved to the Piparo forest, converted to the Rastafari movement and changed his name to Ras Shorty I. There, he created a fusion of reggae and gospel music called jamoo in the late 1980s.

Some of the Greatest soca artists of all time are Shadow, Sparrow, Lord Kitchener(Deceased),Machel Montano and Xtatik, Superblue (previously Blue Boy).

Convinced that there would be a demand also in the high north, for the irresistible groove and streetwise spirit which is the hallmark of SOCA, the first true Swedish soca band was formed in 1990.

Guitarist, pannist and singer Lars Hansson formed the band in 1990 together with his brother Mats Hansson who plays the keyboards and Björn Hansson who plays the bass. All three composes and arranges for the band. They have several times visited Trinidad to learn about the music and to establish contacts. Besides Lars, Mats and Björn, Soca Rebels comprises Annika Lidhammar and Yvette Palm on backing vocal, Klas Nilsson on trumpet, Kristian Gustafsson on trombone and Anders Howerdal on drums. Soca Rebels plays a mix of original material and great soca masters like Crazy, Baron, Kitchener, Shadow etc. and frequently plays on carnivals, fêtes, clubs and parties.

Some highlights through the years:

1991 first single released with a Swedish version of Crazy's Nani Wine. The record was on the billboard list in Trinidad!

1992 Soca Rebels backed calypsonian Crazy during his Swedish Tour!

1994 the second record released in Trinidad with original material. Plenty airplay on Trinidad's radiostations

1995 the band played at the World Championships in Athletics in Gothenburg and at the Stockholm Water Festival as one of the warm-up events for Arrow.

1996 the band visited the carnival in Port of Spain, and came back loaded with inspiration. The major gigs were at Stockholm Water Festival and the Norrköping Carnival.

1997 the major gig was as the closing event of the Gränna Andreé Centennial Festival. Soca Rebels ended the concert playing on a truck with the audience following behind!

1998 Soca Rebels performs live and direct on National TV in one of Sweden most popular TV shows! Saturday Night and 1,380,000 viewers!

2000 The band performed at Norrköpings Carnival in Sweden with guest artist Shirlane Hendrickson from Trinidad. Soca Rebels met Shirlane just one hour before the concert and went on stage together to "mash up de place"! The concert was released on the CD "Raw Soca"

2001 Soca Rebels again teams up with four times crowned National Calypso Queen of Trinidad & Tobago Shirlane Hendrickson at the festival at Norrköping Carnival

2003 New single released with a remix of Crazy's Oh Baby! Crazy performs with Soca Rebels in Stockholm. Successful concert, which gave the idea that Crazy and Soca Rebels will record a song together for Crazy’s next album

2004 Lars Hansson performs with Crazy in Trinidad on the launching of Crazy's album "Trinidad Crazy".
The album contains "Sweeter Than Honey", produced, arranged and played by Soca Rebels!

2005 Soca Rebels produces the song Rebel Jam (One For De Road) for Crazy's album "Sweet Madness".
The new group in Trinidad House Of Rapsoul, have two songs produced by Soca Rebels on their debut single The Awakening Vol. 1

Soca Warriors in Panama for crucial World Cup clash
by Gary Smith
Caribbean Net News Correspondent
Thursday, October 6, 2005
PANAMA CITY, Panama: Trinidad and Tobago, the only Caribbean team in contention for a place in next summer's World Cup tournament in Germany, arrived in Panama on Tuesday to prepare for Saturday's CONCACAF World Cup match against the hosts.
The 22-member squad left the Caribbean early Monday morning to Miami, Florida before departing later that night for Panama City, where they will assemble for five days before meeting Panama at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez stadium.
After the long trip, head coach Jonathan Swiller plans to take it easy, using the early training session as a recuperative one.
"Wednesday and Thursday, you can have four good training sessions. Friday only one in the stadium to give them rest again," Beenhakker told the Trinidad Express.
The Dutchman is hoping to use the sessions to work on his team's ball distributions, especially in the midfield.
"For me, the midfield is the heart of the team. The problem always is in the midfield to get enough balance...to get enough players who get the ball back and enough players who will create football and so on.
"I have to say that in that way I am very happy with the return of Russell Latapy, but at the same time it's a hell of a job to get a good balance with Russell and Dwight...those guys together," Beenhakker said.
The 'Soca Warriors' are currently sitting in fifth position in the sixth team grouping, and following their 2-0 defeat to Costa Rica in their last match, they will be playing for a victory and hoping that USA can dismiss Costa Rica.
Costa Rica has 13-points from their 11 matches, six-points clear of Trinidad, and a win against the Americans will virtually book their ticket to Germany 2006.

Think carefully" before joining SOCA

By Eve Pertile

There is significant pressure on hundreds of seconded officers to sign up for SOCA, according to John Francis, general secretary of the Police Federation of England and Wales.

Phil Aspey, secretary of the Superintendents' Association, and Mr Francis both said they could not currently advise their members to join the new agency.

Just seven months before the agency is due to be up and running, Mr Francis said officers considering a move should use their brains because the agency is really 'playing on [officers'] hearts'.

He told Police Review: 'What SOCA are saying is: "Trust us and sign up. We will look after you". They really are playing on [officers'] hearts, because these are officers who are dedicated to crushing crime in this country and their hearts are telling them to sign up, but we are telling them to use their brains.

'No contract has been agreed, so there is nothing to sign. Until we can get a contract worth signing, we would urge officers to think carefully.'

Serbian Orthodox Choral Association (S.O.C.A.)

Soccer Organization of Charlottesville-Albemarle (SOCA)

Hidden away in an alpine meadow in Slovenia's Triglav National Park lies a cluster of simple but comfortable stone and wooden chalets surrounded by wild flowers and the soaring peaks of the Julian Alps. The stunningly beautiful Soca river which flows beneath this plateau is one of Slovenia's highlights and Pristava Lepena is definitely one of the country's most charming accommodations.

Iwer Gets Soca Station
By Blue Wolf Media
Jul 8, 2004, 4:52

Neil 'Iwer' George and Denise Belfon
Trinidad and Tobago will soon get its first strictly soca radio station courtesy soca artist, Iwer George. George, who received one of three community radio licences, plans to officially launch the station during the Independence holiday weekend at 51 Point Fortin Main Road.

However, the station has not yet been named, nor has a band been acquired.

“This station will be the first only soca station in Trinidad and Tobago and the world,” George said. George applied for the radio licence in April 2002.

He explained that his decision to go strictly soca was based on his belief that soca music was the only music genre without its own radio station.

“We have everything else at a high percent,” he said. “The only thing that we don’t have at a high percent is soca.”

George explained that the station would also provide advertising opportunities for businesses within the Point Fortin area, as well as cater to those who lived “over the hill” and could not previously pick up any stations.

Another recipient of one of the three community licences was producer Kenny Phillips, whose station – WACK FM – will be based in San Fernando.

WACK FM, Phillips explained, is an acronym for “We Are Culture Krazy,” and speaks to his aim to focus on local music of all genres. Too many local radio stations he noted focused on foreign music, while local music was basically ignored. He aims to change this with his station.

“The whole country is out of wack,” Phillips said. “It is time to get back into wack, 100 percent local content.”

The third community licence was granted to Side Walk Radio in Curepe. A total of 13 new radio licences were approved by the government on Tuesday. The remaining ten licences are national licences and were granted to several national organisations.
