Woodbury race heats up

By Brendan Scott Times Herald-Record bscott@th-record.com Woodbury –

To the patchwork of communities tucked in these rocky hills, it must sometimes seem as if the Orange County Legislature's 14th District is a land besieged. To the south looms the nuclear power plant at Indian Point with its 10-mile evacuation zone. To the east sits West Point, which brings jobs and prestige but withholds thousands of acres from the tax rolls. To the west are the traffic conundrum of Woodbury Common and the exponential growth of Kiryas Joel. It should be no surprise, then, that both candidates vying to represent this area in the county Legislature approach their campaigns with a certain siege mentality. Over the years, Ralph Caruso and Roxanne Donnery have each gained a reputation for aggressively assessing and pursuing each new threat to this area's cherished quality of life. That shared tenacity might explain why the two have so often clashed over matters of politics, motivation and approach. On Nov. 8, they'll go head-to-head for the second time in four years, a rematch sure to be among this year's most-watched local races. For Caruso, this race is just the latest step in a 35-year quest to gain a voice in the community he first moved to "to mind my own business; own my little piece of land." But whatever pretense of seclusion Caruso had soon vanished after the faucets in his new house belched brown water, and his neighborhood had to fight to get municipal water. Caruso said he was "introduced to a government that wasn't as responsive as it should be." Since then, Caruso has been a fixture at all manner of public meetings, where he often rails against taxes or some zoning issue. As legislator, he promises to challenge the county budget process, fight for a larger share of county sales tax revenue and push the county to investigate the urban planning practices of the Hasidic community of Kiryas Joel. These are things Caruso says Donnery should have accomplished after two terms in Goshen. "She's been there eight years," he said one recent afternoon while handing out palm cards at the post office near his Highland Mills home. "What has she done?" Donnery will tell you she has done everything that others in power told her she couldn't – or shouldn't – do. Last year, the Democrat was among a handful of lawmakers who pressed the county to sue the politically influential Village of Kiryas Joel over its plan to tap the New York City aqueduct. She displayed a similar drive in the mid-1990s as president of the Highland Falls school board while advocating for more federal impact aid from West Point. But Donnery says it was while protecting her mentally ill older brother on the school bus that she "learned to take on bullies." "Who's your opponent?" a patron of the Fort Montgomery post office asked Donnery during one of her campaign stops. "His name is Ralph Caruso," she said, pausing to smile, "and he's a bully." While this is a county election, it can hardly be separated from local politics. Caruso heads the Republican committee that refused to support the party's incumbent candidates for Woodbury Town Board. He also works for state Sen. Bill Larkin, R-Cornwall-on-Hudson, who must face Kiryas Joel's potent block vote every two years. Each could prove to be a liability for Caruso. "He would have a hard time taking a stance, when his Senator, who he works for, has put so many dollars into that community," Donnery said. "His actions are what helped empower the bloc vote." Caruso, however, says his public opposition to Kiryas Joel's expansion confirms his independence. His only motivation, he said, is preserving the quality of life of a district surrounded by threats. "I do what I believe is right," Caruso said.

Election day will be reckoning day for Mr Caruso. I do not see him getting the support of the voters in Woodbury. I hear too many negative things about him.
for example:
1. Aid to Senator Larkin. How much $$$ has Larkin given to KJ? Larkin tells Woodbury there is no money to give.
2. He was one of the members of the Committee that did not support Sheila Conroy for Supervisor or Geraldine Gianzero for Town Council. They are both incumbents.
3. Was quiet about the pipeline until he saw the groundswell of residents opposed to it. Then gives a last minute speech at a County meeting. To little too late.
4. Runs with Dancing Hank ( that should be enough to vote NO for Ralph Caruso)

He was one of the members of the Committee that did not support Sheila Conroy for Supervisor or Geraldine Gianzero for Town Council. They are both incumbents ,well the Town workers glad becasue we dont support them either. Its not about given your friends partime time jobs that become full time or hiring your famly members. Oh aand Larkin has always steped up and got money for trucks what has she got us?????

Dear Workers:

You highway guys are just a little too much. Maybe if you were a little more reasonable and a little less ornery, you would have what you want. "You get more flies with honey than you do with vinegar". I understand that the only reason why the town employees have no contract is because YOU have been so thick-headed. So don't blame the town supervisor for your stubborness. And if you think Ralph is going to help you, think again, because He was the one that was behind the move to take away your health insurance!!!!

Our town workers work very hard for us and deserve to be paid and treated well. All hard workers do! Myself?..not seen a raise in 2 years...company says hard times. No choice.. there are hard times. Please remember, do not throw out the baby with the bath water...try negotiating with (against?) a guy who gets paid to make sure the money heads in other directions!

Anti-Semitism charged
Hasidic businesses' lawyer files notice of suit with town

By Chris McKenna
Times Herald-Record
cmckenna@th-record.com

Blooming Grove – A lawyer for two Hasidic businesses involved in a construction dispute with the town has filed papers suggesting anti-Semitism is to blame, prompting an angry denial by the town supervisor.
A notice warning the town of an impending lawsuit implies that officials stopped work on a commercial building and denied a request to modify the plans last month because the builders were "Hasidic Jews whose outward appearance evidences their religious orientation."
Elsewhere, the notice mentions comments by Planning Board members that "were made in an effort to stop completion of the building on the premises that will be used by persons of the Jewish faith."
The insinuation of anti-Semitism has infuriated Supervisor Charles Bohan, who accuses the builders' lawyer of weaving an unsubstantiated and inflammatory charge into what was otherwise a routine construction disagreement.
"It's insulting, and it's a cop-out for a violation of our building codes," he said.
Dennis Lynch, the builders' Nyack lawyer, said Blooming Grove officials acted unduly harshly toward his clients, although he offered no evidence supporting his claim of bias.
"There's no question that they were treated differently," he said. "But I'm not going to try this case in the press. I'll let a jury decide that."

Charges of anti-Semitism are not unexpected. That's the knee jerk reaction from some KJ developers whenever they're forced to play by the same rules as everyone else.
Looks like they'll have to abide by those rules in Blooming Grove, unlike Monroe, where they follow the rules they like and ignore the rest, all with the blessing of the KJ owned Town Supervisor and Town Board.

The Town employees are dragging the union issue on - not Gerri. First of all - Gianzero and Campbell cannot make decisions on behalf of the Board so everything that has been given or denied has been approved by at least 3 Board members. Curious thing though, the dispatchers had no problem with their contract, and neither did the PBA. So - who is really the entity that is holding up the progress. Also, review the bills submitted for the Union negotiations - they are not as high as you are lead to believe.

To "Workers"- Ralphie boy dangles that elusive carrot before your eyes whenever election time rolls around. He no sooner has control over what Mr. Larkin does with the $$ than I do...and I do believe Mr. Larkin is running out of patience with his little lackey. Mr. Larkin shook the money tree four years ago to help out Ralphie boy and he still couldn't win the election. Here we are four years later, and the game plan hasn't really changed. Ralphie boys gets his boss to throw you guys a crumb, and you gobble it up like you've never been fed. Look at the facts, and see exactly what the "almighty ring", I mean Ralph has truly gotten for YOU over the years...lots of empty promises. Larkin holds the purse strings, and he has NEVER looked favorably on Woodbury. If you think Ralphie boy going to Goshen is going to relax those strings at all, you're dreaming!

The comment about the WORKERS not wanting the Union Contract resolved is just nonsense. The town workers have not received a pay raise in two years, going on three. The negotiation committee of the town board agreed with individuals trying to settle the contract but after "agreement" from the group, Town Supervisor changed numbers. If "committee" has power to negotiate it should know bounds of approval. Good Faith I am sorry to say wish we had some.
Town taxes are not that bad, if you look at tax bill you will see most are school and town officials can not do anything about that, so why do they always talk about reducing taxes?

Ralphie Boy needs a lesson. Maybe Mr. Larkin should do a backround check on Ralphie as he supports the Republican party? He has more meetings with Democrate Party and supports there people.
Don Siebold, Dancing Hank and Mike Aronowitz are only puppets to this man and he keeps pulling the strings.
We can not forget Ralphie best decision since being the Chairman of the Board, when a family requested that their house be converted to a "Mother/Daughter" and Ralphie wanted to know who would be living in the house. Response was "my parents" then Ralphie said, that is not a mother daughter use, it is parents not daughter so he had to review fully.
Beleive it or Not.

Does this town run entirely on fear? I can’t believe that I’m the only one willing to put my name on what I write. Some of you may be in sensitive positions, but what’s up with the rest?
If you believe in what you say, why not sign it?

Jonathan
Youve been involved in local politics maybe a year or so. Im not putting you down. You and SOCA have done really good stuff. Specially with the annexation that you got dropped. But you don't have a town job or one that relies on politicians in some way so you dont really now what Ralph and his friends can do.
Thats why I dont sign this letter.

Anonymous said...

Hey its not just if YOU work for the town. If youre wife or husband or mom or dad or sister or brother or cousin do Ralph will go after them to. Thats the kind of swwet guy he is!!!! And he doesnt have to do it himself. He has his pit bull Don Siebold do it for hime some times. Siebold really enjoys screwing up peoples lives and jobs. I have eyewitnessed that.

Then maybe we should all find our backbones and tell Ralph and company to go to hell in November. Re-elect the incumbants and MQ, then work to get rid if Mike Aronowitz, then work on the rest of the boards that Ralph has hand picked...a little man with an even smaller brain. Keep picking off his soldiers and he will not be able to stand alone! Perhaps even big boss man Larkin will show him the door!

I dont like having to use secret ID's however, i have witnessed first hand the hell Ralphie and his band of brain dead followers can do...all along with the Honorable Senator from the Land O' Corrupto. If people feel more comfortable blasting this SOB for what he really is with a secret ID thats OK...just as long as we keep it up. Sometimes you have to go underground to fight the power ;-) I am just happy to see on here i am not alone.

You are all quick to get rid of Aranowitz who does not do much , but he did get money for the WALMART sign when no one else could.AS for the rest of you when you need your roads done or other town servies like today in the rain you all are quick to have us out there in a storm, while the WPD gets EVERYTHING IN THEIR NEW CONTRACT. While the rest of the elected people hire friends and family we still have not got a contract!!!! Signed
I have not gotten a raise in two years!

Anonymous said...

You can go on and on about not getting a raise, and blame it on the board, but reality is Mr Worker that rumor is the employees want everything the police have. Get yourself an education, go to police training, carry a gun, and you can get everthing the police have!

Anonymous said...

in Re' to WORKERS above comment "when you need your roads done or other town servies like today in the rain you all are quick to have us out there in a storm.....I say to you , Isn't that your job function and what you get paid to do !! fireman put out fires, cops arrest bad guys ,clerks type and file and that's the way it is in this world .If you don't like your job then quit and let somebody else do it !!!

Anonymous said...

first of all half of the cops probally didn't go to college and got grandfathered in before credits were needed. Fact more highway and construction workers are injured in the line off duty than cops. And if you people wan't us to, I'm sure the workers would carry guns to get a raise.

Anonymous said...

Whether or not some of the Police Officers were hired before the mandated college requirements, it is absurd to think you are entitled to everything they are as written in their contract. You should worry about what other Highway Departments in the area get, not Police Departments, you are comparing apples to oranges. I'm sure the Police do not try to get the same contract as Doctors or Lawyers, neither should you. Worry more about getting yourselves a fair contact and less about what others in non-related fields are getting.

Anonymous said...

Workers write that maybe they will not plow our roads to get a contract, GOOD IDEA, "NOT!!!" Try doing a little work, bargain in good faith and do not try to pull off a "Highway Robbery" with Bully Tactics. Thats Raplh's & his gang members method. Oh by the way your not cops so don't think you deserve what they get. Lastly, can we really write in "James Galvin" for Judge. Great idea.

Anonymous said...

You CAN REALLY do a write in vote...just have to use his legal name of James Galvin, not Jim or Jimmy. Wouldn't that knock Dave and Ralphie's hand pick on their asses! Could you just imagine the look on Ralph's face!!! Oh come on...let's do it!
